What is Allied Health? Allied Health professionals are university-qualified health professionals who are not part of medical, dental or nursing vocations. Access to Sydney-based services may be supported through government programs or other sources of funding. They have specialised expertise in various areas, such as Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Osteopathy, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Chiropractic, Podiatry and more to help with your recovery or rehabilitation. Do I need a referral to access Allied Health services? As outlined by Allied Health Professions Australia, these types of services can usually be accessed directly by any patient paying privately without a referral. This includes people who may claim rebates through a private health insurer. There are also a range of national and state-based funding schemes and programs available, such as services provided by community or aboriginal health services, Medicare funded services, and disability providers. In these cases, you may need a referral, typically from a general practitioner. The importance of palliative care support at home As defined by Palliative Care Australia, this term refers to person and family-centred support provided for someone “with an active, progressive, advanced disease, who has little or no prospect of cure and who is expected to die, and for whom the primary goal is to optimise the quality of life.” While this is often achieved in residential aged care facilities and hospitals, at Roaming Healthcare we feel it’s important to seek this assistance in the home environment. It means you or your vulnerable family member can live life as fully and as comfortably as possible in familiar surroundings - alongside personal belongings and much-loved pets.
